Summertime is a wonderful time of year. Remember what it was like to look forward to being out of school, with time to play from the moment you got up till you went to bed? Recall the innocence of summer, the marveling at the miracles of nature, the little creatures, the birds and the butterflies?
With your hectic schedule as an adult, it may be harder today to find that time for communing with the natural world. Bird and butterfly feeders are a great way to bring a little bit of nature to you. You can entice an assortment of creatures to your world, and at the same time provide nourishment to them.On top of providing a way to experience nature up close, butterfly and bird feeders add bright, colorful points of interest to your garden or patio.
Butterflies and hummingbirds are easy to attract to your garden. The assortment and number of butterflies and/or hummingbirds in your locale will vary depending on the time of year and where you live. Feeding butterflies and hummingbirds is simple and the ‘nectar’ you make from sugar and water is the same for both creatures.
To make nectar, boil some water and remove it from the heat. Then stir in sugar at the rate of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. There is no need to cook the mixture, just be sure that the sugar dissolves completely. Allow it to cool to room temperature before putting it into the feeder; then hang your feeder in a shady spot in your garden or near your patio.
For hummingbirds, a feeder with homemade nectar is quite suitable. For butterflies, you can use a feeder with nectar or pieces of overripe fruit. If using nectar, place absorbent material such as paper towels on the bottom of the feeder and thoroughly saturate it with the nectar. Be sure with the butterfly feeder, to place one or two bright yellow or orange plastic kitchen scrubbers on the dish to both attract butterflies and to give them a place to land.
Bring a little nature in to you with beautiful feeders. You will enjoy the sense of serenity and peace that the little visitors bring along with fond summer memories of the past.
